F.N.C.C. 2012 ANNUAL LECTURE
Friday, 20 January 2012
Dr. MARTIN NEARY
FNCC may only have been in existence for three years, but it has attracted world famous cathedral musicians for its Annual Lectures. In 2010 the inaugural lecture was given by Philip Moore, speaking on 'Composing for the Church today' and in 2011 the lecturer was Dr Barry Rose, who gave a riveting lecture on his experience of founding Guildford Cathedral Choir.
This year, we were privileged to welcome Dr Martin Neary, former organist of St Margaret's Westminster, Winchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, with his wfe, Mrs Penny Neary. Dr Neary, a most engaging speaker, spoke on a subject of intense interest to all of us, the maintenance and development of the cathedral music tradition. It was gratifying that a large audience attended this event, preceded by Choral Evensong at which the choir sang Dr Neary's responses, Rubbra's Evening Service in A flat, and Mendelssohn's There shall a star. Everyone present agreed that Dr Neary's thoughtful and challenging words, born of a lifetime's experience at the top levels of cathedral music, were full of wisdom. They were worth travelling a long way to hear - and while obviously most of the audience was from Newport and its immediate area, one FNCC member drove all the way from Nuneaton for the event!
