The Very Revd Jeremy Winston

1954-2011

The cathedral musicians are grieving at the untimely death of our Dean, Fr Jeremy. We have such happy memories of his Installation on September 10th this year, with its packed cathedral and wonderful variety of music including Logos, a work he composed himself for the occasion for unaccompanied choir, and also Simon Mold’s magnificent new anthem Life restored, composed to a text by Fr Jeremy.

One of Fr Jeremy’s first acts as Dean was to admit a new Head Chorister, Deputy Head Chorister, two Senior Choristers and two Choristers on his first Sunday morning, September 11th, and I know from extensive discussions with him that he was intensely interested in the choir and its contribution to the cathedral liturgy and mission. We were delighted and honoured that he had consented to be President of the Friends of Newport Cathedral Choir.

We had only two Sundays with him (including three fine and inspiring sermons) before he was taken seriously ill. Fr Jeremy was a great man, with many and varied gifts to offer the cathedral; pastoral, erudite, witty, positive, creative, forward looking, a fine musician and poet, he will be immensely missed.
